The DIGITAL LANDSCAPES depict a world in which the virtual and the real can no longer be clearly separated. Trivial objects, garbage, and other trifles that \"importance\" overlooks are scanned and collaged together in a 3D graphics program. The resulting compositions resemble landscapes that could have been photographed from outer space or viewed under a microscope.

From a distance, observers will recognise blurry figures and faces. Moving up close, they will see an abstract meshwork, in which colors clash complementarily in some places and then flow into one another elsewhere. The Cartesian geometric severity of the meshwork is contrasted by the soft subject matter. The eye can either linger on a figure or, upon closer inspection, wander across the surface of the picture, guided by the lines in the grid or the soft color transitions. Having started working on the technique in 2009, I'm still drawn to finding that point when the two pictures interlock and disappear within each other to create a new composition with an own internal logic.
","slug":"plectage"},{"name":"PUBLIC SPHERES","description":"Viewed from far away, the pictures in the \"Public Spheres\" series look like abstract hexagonal patterns covering a sphere. Only when seen from up close does their photographic subject matter become recognizable. Triangular fragments of pictures of national and international plenary halls have been mirrored and multiplied to form intricate patterns. With their semicircular seating arrangements, most European plenary halls often have the same basic layout but diverse architectural styles. The same goes for the Public Spheres. Being composed of photographs, each pattern looks very different, even though it always has the same underlying structure. The hexagonal pattern could be said to stand for the universal framework of democracy, whereas the photograph represents its local style. The series explores fields of tension between universality, globality, pluralism, national identities and democracy.
