ABSTRACTION
13.06.2012
Looking at Kandinsky, did abstraction really slowly emerge out of a figurative tradition or is such a slow transition – the last painting a little more abstract than the one before – a kind of fiction? If so, what was this fiction meant to hide? Did he unconsciously try to cover up the true story of a brutal secession by telling another story of slow and soft progress from figuration to abstraction?
In Kandinsky, the disappearance of the landscape in favour of abstraction seems to go hand in hand with the disappearance or loss of gravity. It’s as if things, having lost their roots in the world, become part of some new constellation in the sky.
