THE CREATIVE UNCONSCIOUS
18.07.2012

We tend to think creativity in terms of creating something new but what if 99 % of the time creativity is used to fill in blanks the conscious brain will never even realize were there?

The “creative unconscious” closes the gaps in perception to create a seamless narrative for consciousness’ dream of the self. And what does this “creative unconscious” use to patch up the white areas in the cognitive map? Memories?

No, isn’t it the opposite way around? Isn’t it the concrete memory itself that is the blurry area on the cognitive map and don’t we use most of our imagination to dream up the concrete situation this fuzzy memory is based on?

Either it’s the blurry perception of the world outside that gets sharpened up using memories or it is blurry memories that get sharpened through perception of the outside world. Either way, creativity bridges the gaps in perception to form the illusion of mental clarity.
